15 Years of Digitalizing Suriname's Government — and Why This Month Was a Milestone
On 11 August, the official kickoff of the digitalization of Suriname's ministries took place. For me, it marks a milestone in a journey that started in 2010.

On 11 August 2026, GISsat and the E-Government directorate under the Cabinet of the President held the official kickoff of the digitalization process within Suriname's ministries. About half of the ministries have already started — and they're seeing the benefits: greater efficiency, faster service delivery, and more transparency.
A 15-year journey
For me, this isn't the beginning. Since 2010 I've worked on moving Suriname's government from paper to digital — from the modernization of the public-domain cadastre (published in GIM International), to the World Bank-funded transformation of mining-rights processing at the Ministry of Natural Resources, to the process designs behind land conversion and land-lease collection.
The lesson that never changes
Process first, then tooling. Roughly 80% of the work is understanding and modelling the process with the people who run it; 20% is building the system. Digitalization succeeds when change management gets the same attention as technology.
What's next
The remaining ministries, deeper integration between systems, and the geospatial layer: connecting digital processes to location intelligence, so decisions aren't just faster — they're spatially informed.
